Mattress selection

Every day we spend about 8 hours sleeping. Not only our morning mood and performance, but also our health depends on how well our sleeping place is set up. Choosing the right bed is only half the battle. It is also necessary to choose a suitable mattress, because in case of error you will experience muscle and back pain, insomnia and even allergies. Making the right purchase is not as easy as it may seem. Outwardly all the mattresses are very similar but they can differ significantly in the type of filling, presence of springs and other parameters. Let’s try to figure out how to choose a mattress for the bed to ensure a healthy sleep and comfortable rest.

The easiest part is choosing the right size. It is enough to measure the inside perimeter of the bed by removing the old mattress:

The length of the mattress, as well as the bed, should be 10-15 cm greater than the height of the tallest of the sleepers. The standard length of modern mattresses is 190-200 cm, but sometimes there are more massive products;
The width of the mattress should of course correspond to the width of the bed, but note that the width of the bed should be twice the width of the shoulders of the sleeper. The standard width of a single bed mattress is 80-90 cm, a half bed is 120-140 cm, and a double bed is 160-200 cm. Mattresses 200 cm wide are often called King Size;
The thickness of the mattress greatly depends on the presence of springs and the type of the filler. The average rate for the springless products is 15-18 cm, for mattresses with springs – 18-24 cm. this value should be taken into account when calculating the final height of the bed – the bed should be easy to lie down and just as easy to get up;
the maximum load of the mattress is specified in the accompanying documentation. Usually the manufacturer gives the load per bed;
If the measurement of the bed is not rounded, for example, 159 cm, you can round up and take a mattress width of 160 cm. If the deviation from the standard will be 2 cm or more, then the mattress will not fit in the allocated space for it or will hang out in it. This is uncomfortable, so you will have to make a mattress to order. Many domestic factories are happy to provide such a service;
The special mattresses for newborns are produced with a length of 100-120 cm and a width of not more than 60 cm. The design of such products provides reliable support for the child’s spine;
For younger children it is possible to take a mattress of standard size, but when choosing a mattress, pay attention to special models, which are maximally adapted to the child’s body. For teenagers a mattress with the maximum elasticity is best.
The fewest problems occur when a bed and a mattress of the same brand are purchased at the same time.

The key characteristic of any mattress is the presence or absence of a spring block in it. Looking ahead, we note that both options can be used for permanent rest.

Spring mattresses

Mattresses with a spring block are divided into two types:

with a dependent spring block (Bonnell mattresses);
With independent spring block.
Mattresses with a dependent spring block have been produced for over 60 years. Their peculiarity is that all the springs are connected with each other. The springs are made of cold drawn steel wire, they can be in the form of a cone or cylinder. Their main advantages include low price and high strength. The design has more disadvantages. Since all the springs are connected, pressure on some of them causes an instantaneous “response” in the others. This effect is especially noticeable in double mattresses, when the difference in weight of the sleepers is more or less significant: one spouse will certainly roll to the middle of the bed. This effect is inevitable even for a single bed mattress. It turns out that the human spine will adjust to the curves of the mattress, and not vice versa.

In addition, Bonnell-type mattresses over time are squeezed in the middle part, and as a result, instead of a comfortable bed a hammock is formed. If you want to choose an orthopedic mattress for a healthy sleep, then the model with a dependent spring block is clearly not suitable. This is an option for infrequent use, for example, for a cottage.

Independent spring block means that the individual springs are not only not connected to each other, but also in their own fabric cover. Isolated springs perfectly adjust to the sleeping person, and the presence of a cover allows you to talk about the absence of creaks. When one sleeper gets up or turns over, the mattress springs under the other sleeper will remain stationary. No one will roll anywhere, nothing will sag over time.

This design allows for excellent support for the spine and take its shape. The durability of such mattresses is at a high level, as is the price. Orthopedic mattresses are mainly equipped with an independent spring block.

Depending on the number of springs, there are these types of mattresses:

S-500 assumes the presence of 220-300 springs per 1 sq.m. The diameter of springs is 5-6 cm;
S-1000 has about 500 springs with a diameter of 4 cm;
S-2000 has 1000 springs per square meter, with a diameter of 2 cm.
The more springs and the smaller their diameter, the better the mattress will adjust to the sleeping body. If you need to choose a good orthopedic mattress, it is better to take the S-1000 or S-2000.

In addition to the traditional design of an independent spring block, there are mattresses of the Dual Spring type on sale. One spring is in the other, due to which the optimum support of people with different weight is provided – a good option for couples in which the weight of the partners is very different. For the people with superfluous body weight there are mattresses with strengthened spring blocks: the springs therein are made of thicker wire and arranged in staggered arrangement. There are mattresses where the springs in different zones are used with different degree of stiffness. Due to this the maximum ergonomics is achieved because the pressure exerted by the head and pelvis is different.

Springless mattresses

Such products consist of one or more layers of natural or artificial materials, the stiffness of which can vary greatly. The easiest and cheapest option is a foam springless mattress. The first time it will be comfortable, but very soon begin to crumple. Better prove themselves mattresses where foam rubber is mixed with additives of other materials, such as coconut fabric or latex. Mattresses made of latex foam have high elasticity and long life, but the most durable mattresses will be those made entirely of natural latex or coconut fiber. These are elastic, flexible and hypoallergenic products. Depending on the combination of these or other materials, the desired level of firmness is achieved.

The quality non-spring mattress will not be cheap, but in terms of performance it is almost no different from a product with an independent spring block. Since there are no springs in it, no one will roll anywhere, and the problem of creaking will be basically impossible. This is ideal for children’s rooms. Let us add more convenience in transportation, since the springless product can be twisted. True, under such a mattress requires orthopedic lattice made of flexible lamellae – such is the base of most modern beds.

The filling, which is located above and below the spring block, is responsible for the stiffness and elasticity of the mattress. The best performance natural fillers, which “breathe”, withstand higher loads and have increased wear resistance. Such mattresses cost more than those filled with artificial fibers, but for people weighing over 100 kg it is better to choose a natural filler.

The most popular natural fillers:

Latex, which is obtained from the sap of the rubber tree, is a resilient and elastic material, which is excellent air permeable, provides good support for the spine. Latex is used when it is necessary to give the mattress a proper level of softness;
Coconut coir is the filler, which is made from coconut fibers. Unlike latex, it is very hard, and the properties of the mattress depend on the thickness of the layer of this material. For example, at the thickness of 1 cm we get the product of medium hardness, and at the thickness of 3 cm – very hard. The material does not absorb odors and moisture, is hypoallergenic and air-permeable;
horsehair. This filler is obtained by cleaning and pressing the hair of horses of special breeds. This is a hard, resilient and wear-resistant material, but in terms of rigidity it is still inferior to cortex. It is used mainly in the elite types of mattresses;
Sisal is rarely used for filling, provides high wear resistance, durability, and has the ability to easily evaporate the absorbed moisture.
Among the artificial fillers most commonly used:

Polyurethane foam, popularly called foam rubber. This filler is used both in budget mattresses, and in the most expensive products. Foam may differ in thickness, density, and workmanship quality, but in any case it has good elasticity and air permeability, does not cause allergies;
Hollofiber in performance is not inferior and even superior to natural materials. The filler consists of many small spirals, so it keeps warmth well, does not absorb moisture and odors, lets air through, and does not deform for a long time;
Ormafoam is a rather rigid filler, whose porous structure allows air to circulate freely;
Memoryform, Memorylatex and Memorix – fillings capable of adapting to the shape of the body and does not exert back pressure on the sleeper. The rest on such a mattress will be the most comfortable and healthy.
Felt, wool, string-fiber, and some other natural and synthetic materials are used for filling mattresses much more rarely. Read Here More Informations

After all the “insides” of the mattress are well studied, it is time to pay attention to what the upholstery of the product is made of. The cover should be made of durable fabric, be strong, hard-wearing and airtight. Typically upholstery is sewn from cotton and linen, there are covers sewn from man-made fabrics (a popular option – polyester), but the best option would be a mixed fiber. For example, jacquard, which consists of cotton and polyester threads.

Some manufacturers additionally use special impregnations that protect the product from insects and fire. The pattern of the fabric can be anything, it does not play a big role.

Cover may be removable and fixed. Non-removable mattress cover provides the tightest fit to the mattress and will be the best choice. Against this type of mattress it is better to take a mattress cover which will take all the stress, as it can be easily removed and washed. Some mattress covers, by the way, have a small layer of filler and can adjust the firmness of the mattress. Removable covers, alas, are virtually impossible to remove and wash at home.

The firmness of the mattress should be such as to keep the spine of the sleeper in the correct position. People of different ages and complexities need different levels of firmness. To greatly simplify, we can say that the greater the weight, the stiffer the product should be. When choosing a mattress for the bed, consider the following rules:

Soft mattresses are suitable for people with low weight, the elderly, as well as people with diseases of the lumbar spine. Latex, hollofiber, and orthopedic foam are used as the filler in such mattresses, and the more layers of the filler are over the spring block, the softer the mattress will be;
medium-hard mattresses are suitable for people of average build and can be used in children’s and adults’ bedrooms. These are universal products that consist of a combination of fillers of different degrees of hardness;
Hard mattresses are suitable for people with higher weight. Often such products are equipped with a reinforced spring block so that the mattress can withstand the most serious loads.
It is necessary to take into account your own preferences. But what to do when it is necessary to choose an orthopedic double mattress, and the spouses have completely different requirements for its firmness. This problem has several solutions:

Mattresses of different degrees of hardness, in which the features of the spring block and the filler in different halves can be radically different;
A mattress with a spring block Dual Spring. The design implies the presence of double springs with different diameters. If the mattress will be used by a person with light or medium weight, the outer spring with a larger diameter works, and for more serious loads the inner spring is also used;
The most radical solution is to take two single mattresses with clearly defined characteristics and combine them under one mattress cover.

Most products on the market are of one-sided type, but some manufacturers offer two-sided mattresses. Their sides differ in the type of coating, due to which the mattress will be comfortable to use in any season. The common option: the “winter” side has a wool layer and softer filling, and the “summer” side is covered with hygroscopic fabric and promotes more intensive air exchange.

People who suffer from diseases of the spine, joints and ligaments, it is better to choose an orthopedic mattress. Its design provides maximum support of the musculoskeletal system, follows the contours of the body and prevents limb numbness. For healthy people such a mattress will be an effective prevention of various diseases related to the back. Orthopedic mattresses are usually equipped with an independent spring block and filler that remembers the shape of the body. An orthopedist can help you choose the right option
